Cesar Chavez Park

Colette Crutcher and Aileen Barr designed and fabricated tile art for the renovation of Cesar Chavez Park in Oakland's Fruitvale district.

Two tile making workshops were held, one with school-age children and the other with high-school students. Participants learned techniques of creating art tiles for use in public places, then made sample art tiles using stamps and rollers to texture raw clay and cut out the tiles.

Reflecting the largely Hispanic character of the neighborhood, decorative motifs were selected from pre-Columbian source material.
